Abstract
Diverse actors and organizations representing governments, civil society, international agencies, and the private sector participated in consensus-building and negotiation activities toward shaping SDG 4 and outlining the priority targets and indicators for which all education stakeholders would have collective responsibility to meet. As the United Nations’ specialized agency for education, UNESCO has been mandated to lead and coordinate the Education 2030 Agenda. Bringing expertise on education governance systems, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, Drs. Benavot and Naidoo of UNESCO provide insight on the diplomatic interactions that took place to bring education to the forefront of the global development agenda and the coordination necessary to fulfill the vision of SDG 4.
