Abstract
Active structural control has been successfully applied to a number of bridges and buildings throughout the world. Many of these applications have implemented active tuned mass dampers (ATMD) which are designed to minimize wind-induced accelerations. In this paper a joint ATMD project between the United States and the Peoples Republic of China which has recently been installed in a TV Communications tower in Nanjing, China is described. This project consists of a full-scale implementation in a 310-meter tower. The design, development, and installation of the complete system is discussed, including the selection of the control algorithm, the application of a digital signal processor (DSP) for computation, and the unique constraints and requirements which apply to this system. The potential for utilization of the system as a control test bed for future research is also addressed.
