Adaptive control of quantum phase in Rydberg wave packets

Abstract

A method developed to program quantum phase in Rydberg wave packets is presented. The method relies on adaptive feedback of direct phase information from the system. The direct acquisition of phase information is achieved by interference between the shaped wave packet and a reference wave packet with flat phase. The reference packet is produced by excitation from the launch state by a transform-limited pulse. The population in each eigenstate is measured by field ionizing the atom in a ramped electric field. The fluctuations in the population of states comprising the shaped wave packet are measured over a short interval, and the calculated rms value is used to update the waveform sent to the acoustooptic modulator.
