Abstract

Portable, easy to use devices are an integral part of a smart city. This paper presents a touch screen interface for a car remote control (CarStar). The CarStar interface is a two way remote control user interface designed to bring instinctual ease of use in a smart environment. CarStar has been designed to offer a control system which is easier to learn than any other. The CarStar interface can be hosted on a user's chosen device, integrating closely with the smart city experience. The system is modeled on a 3D visual representation of an automobile, demonstrating ease of use through pre-existing knowledge of the automobile being controlled. A visual representation of the users automobile allows the user to easily indicate the intended action by pointing at the increasingly detailed parts of the automobile it impacts. As a consequence, the transition from a traditional car remote to the CarStar interface is simple as the interface relies on pre-existing knowledge of the target system as opposed to learned knowledge of the interface itself. Here we demonstrate the value of an interface that leverages the users preexisting knowledge.
