Abstract
To deliver Quality of Service (QoS) in high-speed local networks requires providing router solutions to deal with the specific challenges and constraints present in these networks. Two basic mechanisms for providing QoS are resource reservation and prioritization. These mechanisms are not mutually exclusive. In this paper, several methods for combining prioritization and resource reservation in a connection-oriented local network environment are evaluated. Switch organizations based on these combinations are presented to illustrate their properties and allow a qualitative comparison. Through simulation, these combinations are evaluated in terms of their ability to provide predictable overall communication performance. Connection properties such as latency, utilization and jitter are plotted for mixtures of high, medium, and low bandwidth connections consisting of VBR and CBR traffic.
