Application of digital particle image velocimetry to the study of pathological flow fields

Abstract

Numerical simulations of flow fields created by various pathologies, including stenosis, aneurysm and abnormal left ventricular wall motion created by local ischemia are validated using digital particle image velocimetry. Though displacements within the recirculation regions of the stenosis and aneurism were too small for accurate measures of velocity, separation and reattachment points of the regions for varying Reynolds numbers agreed very well with numerical predictions. For aneurysm, limitations on the upstream length did not allow for full development of the flow causing a flatter in the velocity profile when compared to numerical solutions. Measurements in a contracting sphere yielded symmetrical vector fields as was obtained numerically.
