Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to study preroughening and roughening transitions on the GaAs(001) surface. The (001) surface of GaAs provided an excellent example for the phase transition of preroughening and roughening because it can be driven by both temperature and pressure. Good agreement with both first-principles theory predictions and RSOS theory predictions was reported.
