Abstract

The conceptualization of Autism as a specific diagnosis has evolved over the last 75 years. This evolution is detailed from the initial “early infantile autism” to current “Autism Spectrum Disorder.” Current diagnostic criteria and symptomatology are presented with implications for research, particularly with respect to etiology. Evidence-based treatment is discussed in the context of treatment challenges in ASD. Parental stress and access to services are discussed.
