Abstract
Carbon monoxide exposure is a significant public health threat. It is a common toxicologic exposure and is most commonly formed as a result of the incomplete combustion of carbonaceous materials. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin and decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Exposure can lead to significant cardiac injury, neurologic injury, or death. Treatment focuses on removal from the source, application of 100% oxygen, and consideration for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
