N2 - This chapter examines the ways in which Caribbean Voices changed when Swanzy left for Accra, Ghana, in 1954. Upon his departure, V.S. Naipaul, then in his twenties, took over the editorship. Naipaul was hired on a two-year contractual basis and after he left, Edgar Mittelholzer assumed the editorship and took the program to its conclusion in 1958. In ending the program when it did, BBC officialdom proposed that Caribbean Voices had achieved its goals and was no longer necessary. I argue that the program also ended when it did because, unlike Swanzy, Naipaul and Mittelholzer focused critical attention primarily on established writers rather than on nascent talent in the region. As a result, listener interest waned, undermining any possible justification for continuing the program.
