Abstract

The integration of geospatial information and services with climate-resilient disaster management has become instrumental in enhancing preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. Geospatial information and services accelerate the data-driven decision-making process by providing real-time insights into hazards, vulnerabilities, and climate impacts. However, several challenges persist that impede its full potential. The key issues include the scarcity and inaccuracy of geospatial data, with problems integrating diverse data sources for effective analysis, particularly in low-income or remote areas. The elevated costs associated with advanced geospatial information and services technologies and the requirement for specialized technical skills also present barriers to widespread implementation. Improvements in machine learning and artificial intelligence have enhanced predictive capabilities in automating data processing and the increasing emphasis on collaborative platforms enables stakeholders from various sectors to share data and insights toward more effective decision-making. Geospatial information and services should focus on improving data accessibility and accuracy, especially with satellite imagery, open-source tools, and cloud-based platforms to address future disaster management challenges. The current challenges will require investment in infrastructure, capacity building, and policy frameworks that facilitate the effective use of geospatial technologies for climate-resilient disaster management, ultimately contributing to more resilient communities in the face of climate change. Geospatial information and services will offer a key role in promoting climate adaptation and resilience with long-term monitoring of environmental changes to support sustainable disaster management strategies.
