Abstract

Depression impacts millions of children and adolescents worldwide, causing significant distress for them and their families. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been identified as an evidence-based treatment for depressed youth. CBT targets maladaptive patterns of cognitions and behavior in order to improve mood. This chapter provides a primer on core CBT strategies and techniques used when treating depressed youth. To illustrate these techniques, we provide example dialogue between youth and therapists, sample worksheets and handouts, and other resources. Where possible, we suggest helpful adaptations to these techniques for use when working with younger children. Through this text, we hope to provide practitioners with portable knowledge and materials for use in their practice, increasing access to this valuable treatment for depressed youth.
