Abstract
This paper examines discourses around male sexuality from the Middle Republic (c.300-100 BCE), arguing that sexual restraint was an ideal for Roman men even as imperial expansion offered new temptations abroad and triggered new anxieties at home. While the integrity of endogamous marriages was critical to the aristocratic political class, elite behavior was further constrained by public opinion and the Roman electorate.
