Abstract

Presents an extension and revision of the Hill Counselor Verbal Response Category System that retains the original system's content analytic approach to classifying counselors' responses without regard to their quality, but deviates from the original in its conceptual framework and rules for defining meaningful response units. 34 initial and 2nd interviews of undergraduate clients and their counselors were analyzed. Comparisons suggest relative stability across time but some anomalies within dyads; negative correlations of degree of structure emerged with a measure of client activity.
