Abstract
Children who are deafblind are born with unique challenges. Although they may have the same potential for physical activity, sports, and recreation as their peers of the same age, the lack of support and understanding of their needs by caregivers and teachers often holds them back. This chapter addresses the importance of physical activity, specific teaching strategies, and early intervention approaches. Specific approaches to school age, and later school age, are also provided. Youth who are deafblind have very specific communication needs, particularly when it comes to physical activity, sports, and recreation. This chapter provides research supported ideas and strategies to set children up for success and safety. Adults who are deafblind also need constant access to sports, physical activity, and recreation, and ideas to support their involvement are included. Lastly, this chapter provides resources for caregivers and teachers.
