DU BOIS AND CLÓVIS MOURA: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WORKER AND THE SLAVE IN BLACK MARXISM

In this article, I discuss Black liberation through the lens of Black Marxism as developed by W.E.B. Du Bois and Clóvis Moura. Both authors explore the centrality of slavery in the formation of capitalism, emphasizing that socialist and anti-racist struggles are essential to any revolutionary process. However, recent studies, particularly those within the framework of Afropessimism, argue that equating the slave with the worker overlooks the specific violences directed at Black bodies. Moreover, these studies question the possibility of Black liberation without the destruction of Humanity. In this article, I analyze the works of Du Bois and Clóvis Moura considering this critique, addressing potential ways to overcome the challenges posed to Black Marxism and advance Black radical thought.
