Effectiveness of Video Modeling Intervention for Individuals with Disabilities: A Meta-Analysis of Single-Case Research Design Studies

Abstract

This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of video modeling for individuals with disabilities by synthesizing single-case research design (SCRD) studies. As a result of the literature search, 52 SCRD studies were included in the meta-analysis. Using between-case standardized mean difference (BC-SMD) as the effect size, the overall estimated BC-SMD was 1.83 (95% confidence interval [CI; 1.37, 2.28], p <.0001), indicating a statistically significant and large effect. However, substantial heterogeneity in intervention effectiveness was observed across studies. Subsequent meta-regression analyses identified that target behavior type was a statistically significant moderator, with adaptive skills demonstrating the highest effectiveness. These findings suggest that video modeling is effective, but further research is needed to identify other potential moderators, such as video characteristics, to clarify the conditions under which it is most effective.
