Abstract
The layered M xMnO 2 phases are stabilized by incorporating pillar cations such as potassium making them viable cathodes for lithium batteries. Their cobalt-doped analogs, (Na,K) xMn 1-yCo yO 2·nH 2O, were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction and shown to have the same layered structure. This cobalt doping enhances the electronic conductivity by two orders of magnitude, and is probably the cause of the suppression of the Jahn-Teller distortion found in LiMnO 2.
