Abstract

In this chapter, fundamental building blocks of electromagnetic (EM)-based wireless underground sensor networks (WUSNs) are presented. A detailed introduction to the dynamics of the soil medium, in which WUSNs are deployed, is provided. Then, physical layer underground channel characteristics, communication, and propagation models are analyzed. Error control models are presented, and WUSN connectivity model is discussed. Empirical evaluation is important to get deep insight into the underground channel. To this end, testbed design and experimental approaches are also described.
