Emittance Preservation and Optimization in an Externally-injected CO2-laser-driven Wakefield Accelerator

Abstract

We explore the possibility of self-guided CO2-laser driven wakefield accelerator (LWFA) with external injection from a Linac. Recent development of the CO2 laser at the Accelerator Test Facility(ATF) at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) provides a platform for a proof-of-principle experiment. With the laser system provided, we are able to create a large bubble and, hopefully, improve the emittance and energy spread in a quasi-nonlinear regime. We aim to find the optimal conditions for emittance preservation of externally injected electrons with simulations, which would provide guidance for future experiments conducted at ATF.
