Abstract
Sirtuins are a family of mammalian histone deacetylases that have been studied as possible antiaging epigenetic regulators and were shown more recently to be involved in many processes relating to the field of dermatology. Herein we describe the epigenetic roles that sirtuins play in dermatology. Research implicates sirtuin function is crucial to dermatological diseases including skin aging, inflammatory skin diseases, hyperproliferative disease, scarring, skin cancer, and skin-related inherited diseases. We will highlight the epigenetic basis for sirtuin function in various cellular processes and investigate the potential role of sirtuin modulation in the development of novel epigenetic therapies in dermatology.
