Abstract

Field trials were conducted at four locations in Alberta to evaluate seed yield; fibre yield fibre content, chemical composition and morphology of oilseed and fibre flax type cultivars. Differences exist between flax types in terms of plant heights, stem yield, cut straw length, salvageable straw yield, and fibre content and seed yield. Seed yield was negatively correlated with fibre content. Seed type and fibre types had similar chemical and morphological properties. Results suggest that there are trade-offs between some of these characteristics. The flax type that will be grown will depend on the end-use and profitability to the members of the production chain.
