Abstract

While maternal-fetal transmission of HIV remained beyond our understanding or control, there was little justification for urging a woman to undergo testing once she became pregnant. With the advent of zidovudine (Retrovir) prophylaxis, however, this picture changed dramatically. This panel of experts discusses the issues of patients' rights and HIV testing in these dynamic circumstances.
