Inelastic buckling of tapered members with accumulated strain

Abstract

The effects of accumulated strain distributions along the tapered members due to previous loading cycles such as earthquake ground motions were analyzed. Tapered members were used for pin-based portal frames in which maximum moments took place at eaves and decreased to around zero at the supports. It was found that the frame survived the largest intensity at first but failed by lateral buckling when the same loading was applied again. It was observed that 75 percent of the rafter was in the inelastic range before failure.
