Abstract
Our growing population demands more than ecosystems can provide without damage to them, and we lack the financial mechanisms to invest in their maintenance and restoration. Globalization of markets exacerbates this problem and creates another: it limits the connection between local value-added, secondary processing and local communities. Four strategies are suggested and several specific investment tools are described. Discussion includes how communities might employ these tools to strengthen ecosystem investment and the link between local value-added processing and community well-being.
