Light-Driven Translocation of Signaling Proteins in Vertebrate Photoreceptors

Abstract

Sustained illumination causes massive translocation of three signal transduction proteins, transducin, arrestin and recoverin, into and out of the outer segment compartment of rod and cone photoreceptors. This phenomenon is thought to contribute to photoreceptor adaptation to diurnal changes in ambient light intensity and likely to photoreceptor neuroprotection from the adverse effects of bright light illumination.
