Local wear models that sometimes work: Isothermal sliding

Abstract

We present some local wear calculations that compare the Standard pressure-based local wear model with a newer one (DSS) that includes von Mises stresses. The DSS model predicts the conforming wear tracks that one often finds at real contacts but cannot be predicted by the Standard approach. However, we find that the newer method, while giving conforming wear track shapes, can predict different amounts of global wear when identical materials in conformal contact are slid against one another. This is not found in experimental studies of a nominally similar system. We conclude that no universally local wear modeling approach exists and the present time.
