Abstract
This tutorial is designed to assist coordination chemists with understanding the interpretation of high-resolution mass spectra through showing the effects of isotopes, variable charges and other aspects of mass spectrometry as applied to coordination compounds. A few examples of poorly obtained and analyzed mass spectra that have been published illustrate some of the problems from lack of understanding. Then a number of well analyzed mass spectra are chosen to show the information that can be provided by properly analyzed mass spectra, including information in solution that cannot be provided by X-ray crystal structure determinations.
