Abstract
A mathematical model is proposed for analysing the dynamics of receptor-mediated endocytosis of bivalent macromolecules and recycling in the cell of the corresponding receptors. The conditions allowing one in kinetic experiments to distinguish receptor-mediated endocytosis of mono- and bivalent ligands are defined. From the results it is concluded that binding of the receptors by a bivalent ligand, the heterogeneity of the receptors and their recycling capacity may form the mechanism regulating the different functions of the cell including proliferation, adhesion and differentiation.
