Abstract
Sedimentary calcites and dolomites are commonly non-stoichiometric and such non-ideality in composition may be accomodated by numerous defects in the structure. The origin of microstructures are discussed and the application of SEM, TEM, scanning TEM and high-resolution EM to the study of carbonates is described in detail. Polymorphic transformations, variations in stacking order, modulated structures parallel to (1014), deformation, dislocations, stacking faults and styolites are all discussed and illustrated. -R.A.H.
