Abstract

Photovoltaic solar cells which convert directly to electricity are presently a costly source of power for satellites. A less expensive type of solar cell which may prove to be feasible for terrestrial use is the MIS (metal-insulator-semiconductor) solar cell, which uses room-temperature evaporation or sputtering under vacuum of metals to form a junction at the semiconductor surface.
