Abstract
The genus Eubacterium is composed of obligately anaerobic, asaccharolytic, gram-positive, nonspore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria.1 The genus is distinguished from other genera generally on the basis of the negative metabolic characteristics of its representative species.2 In addition to the nonreactivity in conventional biochemical tests, Eubacterium species are difficult to culture, presenting slow growth even on artificial media designed for fastidious microorganisms and under strict anaerobic conditions.3 Due to a relatively high looseness in its taxonomical definition, the Eubacterium genus has become, over the years, a taxonomic repository of species that could not be placed into other genera.4, 5 Because of its broad definition, the genus has covered a large number of phenotypically diverse organisms.5, 6 It has been reported that the bacterial species belonging to the genus were not phylogenetically homogeneous, and several species were in fact closely related to Clostridium.7, 8 In addition, many oral asaccharolytic isolates that qualified as members of Clostridium but could not be assigned to any of the existing species were eventually assigned to Eubacterium.9–12
