Abstract
The significant advances and applications of multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) are discussed. MDO has made significant advances, capitalizing on high-performance computing and internet technologies to better simulate and optimize diverse systems and products. The advances span numerous academic, government and industrial applications of MDO including nondeterministic models, high-performance simulation and advanced material design. Recent advances at the University of Michigan include methods for optimally decomposing multiple structures into components, and designing material properties simultaneously with optimal material distribution.
