Abstract
The profession of nursing has experienced many changes since its beginning in 1854. Over the years, changes in patient care have transcended from relying on tradition to a focus on evidence-based practice. In addition, available technology and professional roles have expanded for professional RN practice. The future of professional nursing will continue to augment its collective knowledge and power to facilitate the sustainability of equitable and quality patient care in settings beyond acute care, maximize patients’ health, and expand the profession. Nurses’ roles, responsibilities, and education will transform to meet the demand of care created by emerging priorities and national healthcare reform within a multifaceted health system. Technology is transforming nursing globally. In the next 10 years, nursing as a discipline will begin to transform into a modern profession that can respond to local and global challenges facing healthcare systems and society.
