N2 - Geographic information systems need to organize and represent multi-dimensional, multi-domain entities under a well-defined framework. Applications such as ecological modelling and forest productivity modelling demand complex interaction between climatic, topographic, hydrologic, pedological and ecological processes. We present a knowledge based approach for integrating these diverse domains into a uniform framework. Object-oriented techniques are exploited to provide suitable tools for simulating ecosystem process on the basis of well-known, physical features such as hillslopes, streams, and forest stands.
