Abstract
Nonusers of a drug who have never once tried it are usually treated by researchers in the same way as nonusers who have had some experience with the drug. These nonuser groups are, however, significantly different: the former group has not had the chance to have the effects of taking the drug act as a motivation for or against its use, whereas the latter has had this opportunity. Examples from research on cigarette smoking are used to illustrate this problem. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved).
