Abstract
The goal of this research is to explore the computations which opponent mechanisms can perform in artificial neural networks, as opponent processes appear to be a common neural mechanism at many levels of the mammalian visual system. Three important issues arise, concerning the input to the neural units, the type of computation that a unit is performing, and the purpose of the neural computation respectively. These three issues are explored in the context of developing a neural network which can perform visual texture segmentation.
