Abstract

With the development of broadband technologies, more and more Web contentsare being distributed over the Internet. Recent reports have shown that imagescontribute a large proportion among all contents delivered over the Internet. However, how to distribute the image contents efficiently is still an issue tobe resolved, because delivering large-sized images always increase networktraffic and sometimes even lead to congestions. In this paper, we present anovel caching method for scalable image contents delivery based on the layeredimage formats. With this new method, image contents can be delivered by changingthe compression ratio of the scalable images according to the network status. We verified the proposed method with extensive simulation experiments. Theperformance is evaluated by changing the related parameters. Simulation resultsprove that our new approach outperforms conventional technologies, where bothnetwork traffic and user response time are reduced. ICIC International
