Perspectives of adsorption in the new millennium

Abstract

The phenomenon 'Adsorption' has a long history, dated back to the eighteenth century. As the next millennium unfolds, the prospects for the adsorption in the future need to be evaluated. In the field of adsorption technology, this century has been marked by the commercialization of activated carbon and its subsequent improvements. Today, creative applications of granular and powdered activated carbon have established it as a technology of choice for water purification, air purification and solvent recovery applications. The future prospects for adsorption call for increasing sophistication in the production of adsorbents, as well as the ability to model and design complete adsorption systems based on improved understanding of the basic adsorption process. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the application of artificial neural networks (ANNS) in the field of adsorption technology and control processes. This multivariate data processing technique has been demonstrated to have a promising potential in predicting dynamic response of fixed bed adsorption systems, multicomponent adsorption, simulation of the pressure swing adsorption processes and adsorption isotherm predictions. In this manuscript, some of the recent research related to the application of ANN in adsorption is critically reviewed and several potential research areas are identified. The objective of this paper Is to explore the immense potential of ANN in the various facets of adsorption.
