Abstract
The time-dependent phase modulation of ultrashort light pulses using molecular rotational wave packets was studied. The bandwidth of a probe pulse was increased by a factor of 9, by using impulsively excited rotational wave packets in CO2. The negative chirp induced was removed by propagation through a fused silica window, without the use of a pulse compressor. The technique is applied for optical phase modulation over a broad spectral region varying from the infrared to the ultraviolet range.
