Abstract

This chapter details a pathway for improved perioperative analgesia when incorporating practices of prehabilitation and rehabilitation. Following a discussion regarding the experience of postoperative pain and the risk factors for the development of chronic pain, the chapter outlines a longitudinal assessment and treatment for patients, including preoperative risk stratification, multimodal analgesic selection, and teams-based approaches for improved care. Prehabilitation and rehabilitation strategies such as physical therapy, water therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and cryotherapy are explored further.
