Abstract
This article presents a summary of the most important findings stemming from four archaeological excavation seasons and two mapping and intensive survey seasons at the site of Cerro Jazm n in the Mixteca Alta region of Oaxaca, Mexico. Archaeological research has documented an important urban settlement established in the late Formative period (300 BC) and an initial period of urban occupation from 300 BC to AD 300. Our excavations point to a period of political and demographic decline during the Classic period and a renewed occupation starting in the early Postclassic by AD 1000. We summarize the results of excavations undertaken in monumental and public spaces, as well as residential terraces, houses, and possible special use areas of production and storage. We now have a sample of 65 individuals whose remains and isotopic signatures allow us to say something about the health, diet, and quality of life in the ancient city.
