Abstract
The validity of various design parameters for ammonium nitrogen conversion in water hyacinth systems for treatment of secondary effluent was determined experimentally. Ammonium nitrogen loading rate, hydraulic application rate, and hydraulic detention time, were assessed. Tracer studies were conducted to characterize the hydraulics of the pilot-scale plug-flow reactors. Ammonium nitrogen conversion in the system was a function of the hydraulic application rate and reactor length. The ammonium nitrogen conversion rate was independent of the ammonium loading rate. Hydraulic detention time is not recommended as a design parameter.
