Red-cell membrane fluidity in Behcet's disease

Abstract

Microvascular pathology appears to be a major component of the pathophysiology of Behcet's disease. The purpose of this study was to determine red-cell membrane fluidity-deformability in patients with Behcet's disease, a factor known to involve microvascular circulation. The red-cell Alteration test of deformability of Reid et al (Reid, et al, 1976a and 1976b) was employed. The study was undertaken due to an observation of a case that is described in detail. Fifteen additional patients were studied and all were found to have decreased red-cell membrane fluidity-increased red-cell "stiffness". It was thought that increased red-cell rigidity may contribute to microvascular and thromboembolic phenomena in patients with Behcet's disease.
