REGULATION AND CONTROL IN PHYSIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS.

The papers referred to here are grouped in the proceedings of the conference under the heading: Pharmacokinetics. The first paper points out that, while the study of how drugs enter and travel throughout the body, as well as the effects in the target tissues, is a central theme in the pharmaceutical sciences, only fairly recently have the more quantitative aspects been considered, and this may be termed pharmacokinetics. It is also indicated that this subject is being considered under the following aspects: (1) Classical pharmacokinetics, primarily involving the use of relatively straightforward mathematical models and lumping large regions of the body together, but with a reasonable history of application to common drugs; (2) Physiological pharmacokinetics, frequently involving a rather detailed consideration of the various anatomical regions of the body, and with an emphasis on prediction of events.
