Abstract
The fine structure of the striated adductor muscle of the bay scallop, Aequipecten irridians has been investigated with particular emphasis on the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Each cell of the muscle contains a single myofibril. There is no transverse tubular system in this muscle. The cisternae of the sarcoplasmic reticulum are all interconnected by means of tubular elements. This extensive, interconnected system of flattened cisternae and tubular vesicles is distributed randomly with respect to the sarcomere and is in close association with the sarcolemma.
