Abstract

The possible effect of second-order virtual E1 transitions through the giant dipole resonance is investigated in connection with Coulomb excitation of deformed even-even nuclei. A comparison with the second-order reorientation effect shows that this E1 effect should not introduce any significant correction in a reorientation measurement of Q22, the static quadrupole moment of the lowest 2+ state.
