Abstract
In this work we present data which establishes the ability to 1) refunctionalize fluorinated polymeric materials (e.g. ePTFE) with -OH functionality, and 2) to retain both the original membrane morphology as well as the hydrophobic and repulsive forces of the starting ePTFE material. These 'modified' ePTFE membranes in fact, are observed to not only be non-wettable (i.e., contact angle of water >110°) but are extremely reactive to the general class of organosilanes through silanol bond formations. Thus, a dual property material is facilitated which can provide for a surface having non-fouling characteristics normally associated with fluorinated materials as well as enhanced reactivity towards reactions with -OH functionality.
