Abstract
An analytic theory for pseudoknot chain conformations that treats the excluded volume explicitly was developed. The theory of self-avoiding walks was used to estimate the number of conformations for pseudoknot core units. It was shown that increasing the proportion of the hairpin stem in a pseudoknot core unit decreases the number of conformations accessible to the loop.
