Abstract
The sternoclavicular joint is the only bony articulation between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton. It provides a physical foundation for the clavicle, which acts as a linkage between the scapula and the torso. Disorders of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) are uncommon and can often be overlooked in some patients. The etiology can be traumatic, infectious, neoplastic, or degenerative. In this chapter we will review the anatomy and biomechanics of the SCJ as well as the evaluation and management of the common traumatic disorders. Relevant literature, as it pertains to nonoperative and operative measures will be discussed as well as the author’s preferences.
